I don't have a fancy car.
I don't have an especially good looking car.
I'm actually a little big for my car.
But I sure as hell am not buying a new one anytime soon.
I drive a 1997 Toyota Tercel Blackhawk (same style found here). It's paid off, only has 110k miles and gets 37 MPG.
You heard that right. 37 MPG.
Hybrid what?
At current gas prices — $2.15 or so — it costs me around $20 to fill up. And drive over 300 miles.
It may not be fancy or new, but "upgrading" to a new car would be a downgrade in terms of MPG and my monthly bill.
So why should I buy a new car? It just doesn't make sense.

amen to old cars. i'd rather be the last owner of a car than the first. even with one large repair a year, it's still cheaper than having a new one.
my current is a 1990 honda accord w/ 300K miles, and getting ~28 mpg. found it on craigslist for $600(!), and it's chugging along for me.
Bryane - rock on!
