Well, it's been a somewhat tedious process, but I've been able to move both my wife and my Roth IRAs over to Vanguard from Ameriprise.
Considering that I began the conversion in mid-March, it hasn't been that long, but there have been some bumps in the road.
After filling out all of the forms online and sending the paperwork to Vanguard, we were notified that the wife's forms needed to be Medallion Signature Guaranteed. My paperwork, however, didn't come back.
Weird.
This presented a problem, however, because we needed to go to the bank to get the guarantee, and the bank is only open from 9-5. Since we only have one car (that I use) and the wife works from 8-5, getting her to the bank would be an issue.
Thankfully, she had off for one day so we were able to get to the bank and have the form guaranteed.
We sent her paperwork back in, and then I received my paperwork back. I needed to get the Medallion Signature Guarantee.
When I went to the bank, I was informed that only the manager could provide the guarantee, and she was out at lunch. I left.
The next day, I came back, only to find that there was a manager's meeting for the area. No luck.
The next day, I came back again.
She was there, but I had to sit through her spiel about why I should move to the burbs to buy a house if I couldn't afford to buy where we live now. She even asked me how much I paid in rent!
Thankfully, she guaranteed the form. I sent it in, and no three weeks later, my money was moved over.
So we're all set with our Vanguard accounts. I'm managing the money in Boglehead fashion — letting it sit and riding the tide.
