Covering the ING Electric Orange Checking Controversy

We've covered the basics of ING's Electric Orange checking account, but missed out on the recent controversy surrounding it.

Apparently, ING closed some Electric Orange accounts due to the customer's credit. Consumerism Commentary has the scoop:

Evidently, ING Direct performs periodic account reviews and will close accounts from customers who may abuse their overdraft protection based on credit reports. Nick admitted he had been "living in" the $1,000 overdraft protection (more like a cash advance). That could have triggered the account review.

They then, apparently, "retracted many of the closings" and began offering 1% cash back to members.

Now, perhaps in a move to gain some public relations points after a major loss, they are offering cash back to what appears to be a limited number of customers. Here is the email some customers have received:
