VoIP provider SunRocket closed its doors on Monday without any sort of official announcement, leaving more than 200,000 of its customers without service and without any idea of what happened.
There's now a message on SunRocket's Web site explaining the shutdown:
[Two] service providers are assisting and offering to provide SunRocket customers the opportunity to sign up for their services. Both providers have agreed to become preferred providers with special pricing for the SunRocket customers to enable them to migrate their telephone service. Of course, there are other providers and each individual customer can make their own decision as to which carrier they wish to transition to.
Emails to the SunRocket customers are currently being sent with more detailed information on how to sign up with the two service providers.
The basic package with SunRocket was $200/year unlimited plan. SunRocket hasn't announced details on credits for customers or specifics regarding transfers to other providers.
If you're a SunRocket customer, can you let us know what the email you received says?
SunRocket was the second largest VoIP provider behind Vonage, causing many to wonder if stand-alone VoIP services (as opposed to triple-play packages) are doomed. I doubt it, but with Vonage's legal woes, it's a legitimate question.
Thanks to Chewy for the heads up.

I am really pissed with SunRocket not because they shutdown but because they didn't inform us subscribers about it. We would understand if they give at least a month or maybe 2 weeks notice to look for an alternative but no, they just disappeared into thin air without (until now) any explanation on why or how.
Geez just when I thought I got a good deal from a voip provider SunRocket then boom out of nowhere without any notice whatsoever my sservice was shut down. Too bad I can't dispute what I paid to SunRocket from my credit card because I'm on my 5th month of my 12 month plan now. Usually credit card companies allow up to 90 days to accept disputes.
Beware also with Teleblend.com who wants people to believe they're acquiring SunRocket BUT can't and won't continue your service unless you sign up for another plan! Then what? Teleblend was just created a day after SR went down and out…how do you trust a company like that?
Anyways I'm done with VOIP as my sole phone provider, you will never know when this things will happen again, even for a big company like Vonage who just lost lawsuit and told to pay up $50 million plus to Verizon.
I just signed up with Onesuite.com SuiteAdvantage and I get all the features of voip and at the same time has an option to make calls using my cell phone or a landline if the needs arises.
I will never going to prepay $200 for any voip services anymore, I am done with any plans.
I'm a SunRocket customer and I'm pretty irritated. My phone service has been tripping all week. We never received an email or any notification whatsoever. I found out by stumbling on your blog via Technorati!
