I love gadgets. I can't hide that.
I've written before about wanting to buy a PlayStation 3 (to play Blu-ray movies) and Rock Band (to jam out), but talked myself out of it.
Apple's iPhone, however, is a different story.
Since it came out, Debbie and I have pretty much lusted at the iPhone. It's gorgeous. It's groundbreaking. And it's pretty cool, too.
But we didn't pull the plug. The price was too high — $500 to start — and it required switching to a different cellphone provider (AT&T).
Until recently. Debbie's contract with Sprint is up (we don't get service in the house, anyway) and AT&T started selling refurbished iPhones online for $250.
Since her birthday was last week, I bought her a refurbed iPhone — and now we're proud owners.
What makes the iPhone worth it is that it's a practical gadget. So many times, we find ourselves wanting to know how to get somewhere in the car or to look up some information when we're away from the computer.
Now we can do that.
The iPhone is a pretty sweet gadget, but it has real-world, practical use. It's not like the PS3 or Wii, where you only derive entertainment value from it — the iPhone can save you time and money.
For that, it's a worthy investment in my book.

I can do that on my $80 standard mobile phone with a standard plan. I can serve the internet, get directions, search online. The iPhone is just a gimmick, its pretty and new and shiny and everyone thinks they need it. Its no better than pretty much anything out there but it was up Jobs' ass, so it must be gold
I've been trying to talk my wife into letting me get an iPhone for about a year now. I love the idea of staying connected to the internet and email no matter where I go. I'm also a huge music fan, so this gadget would allow me to bring my music library with me.
My biggest drawback is switching cell phone providers. The monthly plans for AT&T seem a little costly to me, especially considering the free mobile-to-mobile I get with my provider that gives me unlimited minutes with my wife, family, and closest 2-3 friends.
I'll take the iPhone plunge soon…just as soon as I can talk my wife, and wallet, into it.
Apple has also proven they're willing to continue updating the platform for existing owners, unlike most phones. So, it should also hold or increase its value. $250 is a reasonable price.

Until I can get my email off my own Exchange 2007 server, forget it. I'll be old fashioned and stick with my Treo 755w.
@jrandom — starting in June, you'll be able to!
